Thanks, Tinsley
Inspiration can come from anywhere and mine struck while watching the Real Housewives of NYC on a Thursday night, seeing an amazing bunny painting behind Tinsley Mortimer giving a confessional. The painting was by Hunt Slonem, an American painter whose work blends the fantastical and the natural. Having grown up with wild bunnies in our yard in western Pennsylvania, I felt an instant connection. When we started our remodel, Slonem’s wallpaper was the first purchase we made to create a whimsical surprise to our powder room. Not to mention a pink sink and an modern take on terrazzo.
Thanks, Portland
We have one shared family bathroom so it needed to have space for busy teen girls, but my husband wanted it to feel bright and calming, while I wanted it to have notes of a traditional Portland home with a twist. Enter my love of patterns and Pratt & Larson, a Portland ceramic tile maker who specializes in handmade and unique shaped tiles. We chose triangles in 5 custom colors. I designed a pattern for the floor that feels both random and cohesive. We continued this tile in to the shower and shower cubby with brass accents to balance the traditional with the modern. Cats not included.
Thanks, Alex
The basement bathroom. Built for sleepovers and the occasional house guest. Functional, big box store tile, plain? Absolutely not. Sure, we included black hex tile from Home Depot, a sweet vanity from Wayfair and some whimsical touches like bee sconces from Anthropologie and a floor sample mirror from Urban Outfitters, but it’s really the custom pattern tile in the shower that brings every guest delight.
I met Alex Proba at a holiday sale on a rainy saturday in Portland. She was selling her rugs and textile designs. I was instantly obsessed with her color and joy. Years later, discovering that she did a tile collaboration with Concrete Collaborative was the perfect gift and everything a basement bathroom needed. It might be my favorite, but don’t tell the others.
